FAQs

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy professionals are licensed health care providers who evaluate and treat people with health problems that affect their ability to move the way they want and function as well as they want in their daily lives. However, as experts in movement and function, physical therapists do not treat only those who are already injured or ill. A large focus of a physical therapist’s treatment is directed at preventing future injury and loss of movement. In addition to “hands-on” care, physical therapists also educate patients to take care of themselves and to perform certain exercises on their own.

How Can Physical Therapy Help Me?

Physical Therapy can help you to:

  • Determine the cause of pain or reduced joint motion
  • Increase muscle strength and endurance
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion
  • Decrease pain or swelling
  • Promote healing of injuries
  • Prevent future injuries through education and home exercise programs

What Should I Expect at my First Visit?

Upon arrival at HARTZ Physical Therapy, you will be greeted by the receptionist. We appreciate your prompt arrival. If you are unable to make a scheduled appointment, please call at least 24 hours in advance, or if an emergency, as soon as you are aware of your scheduling conflict. We will do our best to reschedule your appointment within one or two days. Remember, the consistent completion of a physical therapy program is essential to your recovery.

During an initial evaluation, a physical therapist may measure and evaluate a patient’s strength, range of motion or endurance of an injured area. This will allow them to assess not only what may be causing the pain or decreased function of the area, but also the degree of impairment. After this initial assessment, the therapist will determine an appropriate rehabilitation plan so that the problem can be resolved as quickly and easily as possible. This plan may include both in-office visits and/or at-home exercises. If applicable, it is extremely important to the success of the rehabilitation program for the patient to perform the recommended at-home exercises. This will ensure the greatest possibility of complete recovery.

How Much Will Physical Therapy Cost Me?

Most forms of physical therapy treatment are covered by your health insurance, but the coverage will vary with each plan (see Health Insurance). If you are unaware of the physical therapy coverage available through your health insurance plan, please contact your insurance company prior to you initial evaluation. However, many people choose to pay for physical therapy directly, even if their policy will not cover their treatment or their benefits have run out. If you plan to pay for physical therapy out of your own pocket, please talk with us about our flexible payment options.

Do I need a Doctor’s Referral to schedule a Physical Therapy appointment (Direct Access)?

Recently passed legislation (called Direct Access legislation) allows you, the patient, to schedule a physical therapy evaluation WITHOUT a physician’s referral. This will give you quickly access to a highly qualified medical professional. Please verify your physical therapy coverage with your insurance carrier. If they will not cover direct access services, please relay the importance of this service and your support of the legislation!  To learn more about Direct Access, click here.
