What makes Maddie special?

Meet Maddie Nimmo, one of our Patient Care Coordinators! Maddie is currently finishing her degree in Allied Health Technology – Sports Medicine at Millersville University, and she brings previous experience in a physical therapy setting to the HARTZ PT team.

A former collegiate basketball player, Maddie discovered her passion for healthcare, rehabilitation, and physical therapy through years in competitive athletics. That background shapes the way she cares for our patients — she’s committed to creating a welcoming, positive experience for everyone who walks through our doors, and she’s excited to keep growing her knowledge along the way.

When she’s not at work or hitting the books, you’ll find Maddie spending time with her fiancé, family, and friends, staying involved with basketball, adventuring outdoors, and planning her upcoming wedding.

Want to know more?  Here’s a little Q & A…

Why did you choose to work in the physical therapy/healthcare field?

I chose to work in physical therapy and healthcare because I have been able to experience rehabilitation from both sides. I previously worked as a Physical Therapy Technician, which gave me the opportunity to help patients throughout their recovery and see how much of an impact a great healthcare team can have. I have also personally gone through injuries, surgeries, and rehabilitation, so I understand how important it is to have people around you who are encouraging, patient, and genuinely care about your progress. My long-term goal is to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy, so I am excited to continue learning and gaining experience in a field that means a lot to me.

What energizes you at work?

Definitely people! I enjoy staying busy, talking with patients, helping solve problems, and being part of a team. I especially like when I can make someone’s day a little easier, whether that is helping them with scheduling, answering a question, or simply being a friendly face when they walk through the door. I have always done well in fast-paced environments, so I actually enjoy having a lot going on and figuring out how to keep everything organized.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

One thing I am proud of is continuing to work toward a career in healthcare while also balancing school, athletics, work, and everything else life has thrown my way. My path has not always gone exactly according to plan, but I have learned how to adapt and keep moving forward. I think those experiences have made me more compassionate toward other people because you never really know what someone may be dealing with when they walk through the door.

What’s the biggest misconception people may have about a front-desk/patient care position?

That it is “just answering phones and scheduling appointments!” The front desk is often the first and last interaction a patient has with the office. You are helping keep the day organized, communicating with patients and staff, solving unexpected problems, and making sure people feel welcomed. I think having a positive and organized person at the front desk can really help set the tone for a patient’s entire experience.

What advice would you give patients?

Give yourself some grace and celebrate the small wins. Recovery and progress do not always happen as quickly as we want them to. Sometimes something that seems small—getting a little stronger, moving with less pain, or being able to do something you couldn’t do a few weeks ago—is actually a huge accomplishment. Keep showing up and trust the process!

What is one thing that instantly makes your day better?

My fiancé, Noah, can usually make my day better pretty quickly. Whether we are doing something fun or literally just sitting at home talking and laughing, having my best friend to come home to makes even a stressful day feel a little easier.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

One piece of advice that has stuck with me is that life can change in an instant, so don’t take the opportunities or people in your life for granted. Some of my own experiences have made that lesson very real for me. I try to give my best effort, appreciate the people around me, and not assume there will always be a “next time.”

Where would you be right now if you had zero obligations and money didn’t matter?

Somewhere on a relaxing getaway with Noah! Ideally, there would be warm weather, clear water or beautiful scenery, good food, absolutely nothing on the schedule, and no alarm set for the next morning.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about healthcare, physical therapy, sports, and helping people regain confidence in themselves. Basketball has been a huge part of my life and helped shape who I am, but my experiences with healthcare and rehabilitation have also shown me how rewarding it can be to help someone get back to the things that make them feel like themselves.

What is one experience you think everyone should have?

Being part of a team. Sports taught me so much more than how to play basketball. Being on a team teaches you accountability, communication, leadership, how to handle wins and losses, and how to work with people who may be completely different from you. Those lessons carry over into everyday life and the workplace more than people realize.

Favorite inspirational quote:
“She Believed She Could, So She Did”

Do you have a nickname? How did you get it?
Most people call me Maddie or NemoI! My full name is Madison-Marie, but Maddie has always been the name that stuck. If someone calls me “Madison-Marie,” there is a pretty good chance I am either in trouble or something very serious is happening! I got the name Maddie short for Madison but the name Nemo came from a mispronunciation and began to stick as I played basketball growing up!

What are your hobbies?
Basketball has always been a huge part of my life. I also love spending time with my fiancé and family, adventuring outdoors, traveling, and planning our wedding. I enjoy anything that gives me a chance to be around the people I care about.

Favorite sport to watch? Who’s your team?
Basketball, without question! After playing competitively for so many years, it is hard for me to watch a game without analyzing what is happening on the court. I also grew up around baseball because my dad is an umpire, so sports have pretty much always been part of my life. I do not have a specific team as I love the game in general.

What’s one item you can’t leave home without?
My phone! Between work, school, my calendar, wedding planning, family, and everything else, my entire life feels like it is organized through my phone.

What’s your favorite tradition?
Anything that brings my family together. I come from a big family, so things can definitely get loud and chaotic, but those are usually the moments that end up being the most memorable.

What makes you laugh?
My fiancé and my family. Between Noah and my siblings, someone is almost always doing or saying something ridiculous. I definitely appreciate people who don’t take themselves too seriously and can make me laugh even when I’ve had a long day.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
My two front teeth are fake! I knocked them out when i was younger and have lots of dental work over the years!

What’s your favorite meal of the day?
Dinner! I love being able to sit down after a busy day, relax, and actually enjoy a meal. Bonus points if I don’t have to cook it!

What’s on your bucket list?
Traveling to more places with Noah is definitely high on the list. I would love to see more of the world, experience different places and cultures, and make a lot of memories together. And, of course, marrying my best friend in 2028 is already one pretty big bucket-list item in progress!

How do you like to end your day?
Usually by getting comfortable at home, talking about the day with Noah, watching something on TV, and attempting to convince myself not to stay up later than I should.

What is something you are looking forward to right now?
There is a lot! I am excited to start this new chapter at HARTZ, continue working toward my education and future career in physical therapy, and plan my wedding with Noah. It feels like I am at a point in life where several exciting new chapters are happening at once, and I am looking forward to seeing where they take me.

What has sports taught you that you bring into the workplace?
Sports taught me to be dependable, coachable, competitive, and team-oriented. In basketball, everyone has a role, and the team works best when each person takes responsibility for theirs while still being willing to help someone else. I try to bring that same mindset to work—do my job well, communicate, help my teammates, and keep a positive attitude even when things get busy.
