What should I expect on my first visit FAQ

Helping you feel prepared and confident

What time should I arrive?
Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first visit in order to ensure appropriate paperwork is completed. Bring your identification, insurance card and referral, if applicable.

What happens during my first visit?
At your first visit, your physical therapist will take time to get to know you and your needs. This includes talking through your medical history, asking about your symptoms, and gently checking how you move and where you may be having pain.

Using this information, your therapist will explain what’s going on, what you can expect, and how physical therapy can help. Together, you’ll create a personalized treatment plan focused on your specific challenges and goals—so you feel confident, supported, and on a clear path toward feeling better.

Do you have private treatment rooms?
Most of our therapy happens in our large, bright, and airy gyms where you can move freely and safely. But for your first visit or certain treatments, we also have private rooms available so you can feel comfortable and relaxed while we focus on your care.

How long will my appointment be?
Please allocate one 1 hour for each visit during your plan of care.

Will I see the same person each time?
Yes, At HARTZ PT we treat in PT/PTA teams to ensure the continuity in your plan of care which allows you to work with the same providers each visit.

What should I wear?
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily—such as T-shirts, shorts, or athletic wear. If you’re being treated for a hip, knee, ankle, or foot injury, please wear shorts or loose-fitting pants so your therapist can properly assess and treat the area. For shoulder or upper-body therapy, women may find a tank top or loose short-sleeved shirt most comfortable. This helps ensure easy movement and proper evaluation.

What types of treatment will I receive?
Your therapy plan depends on your evaluation, but most programs include exercises and training to help with daily activities, work, or sports. You may also receive hands-on therapy, posture and movement guidance, and tips for preventing re-injury. We’ll provide plenty of education, a home exercise program, and coordinate with anyone supporting your care to help you recover faster.

Education is a big part of recovery at HARTZ PT. We always make sure there’s plenty of time for your questions. Your therapist will explain your injury, how to prevent it from happening again, and give you a home exercise program to help you heal faster.

Will I be sore after therapy?
You might feel a little sore after a session, especially at the start—and that’s totally normal. Think of it like the good kind of muscle tiredness you get after trying something new. It should be mild and short-lived. Your therapist will always check in with you and adjust things as needed to keep you feeling safe and supported. And if something doesn’t feel right, just let us know—we’re here to help you feel better, not worse.

How often will I need therapy?
The number of therapy visits varies from person to person and depends on your condition, goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Most patients start with 1–3 visits per week. As you begin to feel better and make progress, visits are often reduced. Your physical therapist will discuss a recommended schedule with you and adjust it along the way to make sure it fits your needs and lifestyle.

Will I have exercises to do at home?
Yes—doing a few simple exercises at home can really help you get better faster. Don’t worry—they’ll be tailored just for you, fit into your routine, and won’t take long. Your therapist will show you exactly how to do them safely and make sure you feel confident. Think of them as your secret weapon for feeling stronger and moving easier between visits!
