Active Release Techniques (ART)

A Patented Technique That Frees Up Tight Muscles, Tendons, and Nerves — So You Can Move Freely Again

Dealing with a nagging strain, a repetitive-use injury, or stiffness that just won’t loosen up no matter how much you stretch? Some soft-tissue problems don’t respond to the usual approaches — and that’s exactly where Active Release Techniques comes in.

ART is a patented, hands-on soft-tissue technique for treating problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. After an injury — or from repetitive strain over time — these tissues can thicken and tighten, reducing circulation, limiting range of motion, and throwing off the way you move. Once that happens, ordinary stretching often isn’t enough, and the area stays tender and restricted. ART works to quickly restore function to the affected area, and it’s producing extraordinary functional outcomes for our patients.

Our Services

Every ART session is really two things at once: an examination and a treatment. Your ART-trained provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of your muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves — then treats the abnormal tissue by combining precisely directed tension with very specific, guided movements.

These protocols — over 500 specific moves — are unique to ART. They let your provider pinpoint and correct the exact problem affecting you. This isn’t a cookie-cutter approach; it’s targeted, individualized care built around what your body actually needs.

ART may be a good fit if you’re dealing with:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Tennis elbow
  • Knee pain

Treatment may include:

  • Hands-on tissue assessment — Your provider evaluates the texture, tension, and movement of the affected area to find the true source of the problem.
  • Targeted soft-tissue release — Precisely directed pressure combined with guided movement to break up adhesions and restore healthy motion.
  • Movement retraining — Guided, specific movements that help the treated tissue glide and function the way it’s supposed to.
  • Restoring range of motion — Freeing up restricted areas so you can move fully and comfortably again.
  • Return-to-activity support — Getting you back to training, work, and daily life without the pain that’s been holding you back.

A note on pairing: ART is often one piece of a larger plan — especially for people dealing with chronic or persistent pain that hasn’t let up with rest or time. By releasing tight muscles and freeing restricted movement, ART can help calm the soft-tissue tension that feeds ongoing pain. Your therapist may also pair it with Astym Therapy or other hands-on approaches, depending on what your body responds to best.

What our Patients Say

I came to physical therapy because I was experiencing pain in my right foot arch while training for an Ironman triathlon. Through the use of ART treatments, Hayden relieved that pain and helped me avoid additional injury. Race day was pain-free!

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Active Release Techniques (ART)?

ART is a patented, hands-on soft tissue technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Your provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of the affected tissue, then treats it by combining precisely directed tension with specific, guided movements. With over 500 unique treatment protocols, ART pinpoints and corrects the exact issue affecting you — it’s a targeted, individualized approach, not a cookie-cutter one.

Does ART hurt?

ART can feel intense at times, with a sensation of pressure or a “good hurt” as your provider works through tight or restricted tissue. Most patients find it very tolerable, and any discomfort typically eases quickly. Your provider will always work within your comfort level and adjust as needed.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your specific issue, how long you’ve had it, and how your body responds — but many patients notice a difference within just a few visits. Some soft tissue problems resolve quickly, while more stubborn or long-standing issues may take longer. Hayden will give you a realistic sense of your plan after your first evaluation.

Is ART the same as a massage?

Not quite. While both are hands-on, massage is generally used for relaxation and broad muscle tension. ART is a targeted treatment technique — your provider combines precise pressure with specific, guided movements to break up adhesions and restore normal function to a particular muscle, tendon, or nerve. It’s diagnostic and corrective, not just soothing.

What conditions does ART treat?

ART is effective for a wide range of soft tissue and repetitive-strain issues, including plantar fasciitis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, shin splints, and shoulder, back, and knee pain. If you’re not sure whether your issue is a good fit, a free consultation is the easiest way to find out.

Do I need a referral to try ART?

No — thanks to direct access in Pennsylvania, you can come straight to us without a physician’s referral. That means quicker access to care and one less appointment to schedule.
